The Weeknd's "The Idol" Will Finally Premiere on HBO This June

It's official: HBO's "The Idol" is finally premiering this summer, the network announced on April 17. The news comes less than a week after it was confirmed the show will first debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in May (IndieWire first reported the news in March). The series, which comes from "Euphoria"'s Sam Levinson and The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye), was tapped as an out-of-competition selection.

On April 17, HBO also shared the fourth teaser for the series, which stars Lily-Rose Depp, Dan Levy, and Blackpink's Jennie Kim under the stage name Jennie Ruby Jane. The trailer is soundtracked with a pop hit from another icon: Britney Spears's "Gimme More." The show's cast also includes Dan Levy, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Hank Azaria, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph.

Back in March, Rolling Stone published an investigation into "The Idol"'s behind-the-scenes drama, in which crew members claimed that the show moved in a disturbing new direction thanks to Levinson.

But prior to that, in August 2022, Levy shared some of his excitement about joining the HBO project. "My new brand is The Gutters of Hollywood," Levy captioned a clip on his Instagram page on Aug. 21, 2022. "Thanks in advance for respecting this fun new vibe shift."

Kim has also expressed her excitement about the show, as, through her agency, she previously said, "I found the script very intriguing, so I wanted to be part of the series," per a July 19, 2022, report from Korean news outlet Yonhap. "I feel very excited. I'll work hard, so please watch me with affection."
