The Spider-Verse is getting a massive expansion in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the animated sequel to the Oscar-winning film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse."
Sony Pictures debuted the first official clip on Dec. 13, 2022, and in it, Shameik Moore's Miles Morales returns for an action-packed adventure that involves him and a whole lot of Spider-Men - also pictured in the film's poster that Sony released on April 26. This seems on par with what film producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller shared of the sequel at CinemaCon 2022, teasing that it's getting "way, way, way bigger."
The second official "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" trailer was released on April 4, 2023, teasing more shots of the movie's multitude of Spider-People and Miles's goal to control his own destiny. "Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Nah, I'm going to do my own thing," he says in the new three-minute preview.
In April 2022, Variety reported that during the annual CinemaCon convention, Lord and Miller showed a crowd of movie-theater owners an exclusive look at raw footage from the first 15 minutes of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," but not before sharing some new details about it. According to them, the sequel will take place in six universes and feature a total of 240 characters, compared to "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," which only has 40. The producers also announced the official title of its next film installment: "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse."
Additionally, in a December 2022 interview with Total Film, Kemp Powers, one of the "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" directors, revealed that the main antagonist in the upcoming film and its follow-up will be a joke-villain character named The Spot (voiced by Jason Schwartzman).
Though there's much excitement around "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," fans are going to have to wait a little longer for the film to arrive. On April 20, 2022, Sony Pictures announced some changes to its summer 2023 theatrical-release calendar, as reported by Deadline, and one of the biggest updates is "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse"'s premiere date.
Part one of the follow-up to "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was pushed to June 2023 from its October 2022 premiere date, which means part two has also been delayed, now slated to release on March 29, 2024.
Fans have been buzzing about "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" ever since the franchise's first film won best animated feature at the 2019 Oscars - a category first for a film from Sony Pictures Animation. So with expectations already high, people are especially curious about how much action will unfold in "Across the Spider-Verse" since the film had to be split into two parts.
In a December 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lord and Miller explained the decision to churn two films out of this particular franchise title. "Miles' story is an epic," the pair told the outlet. "We wrote what we thought the story needed to be, and to our surprise, we realized it was two movies instead of one."
