Jennifer Lopez Celebrates 25th Anniversary of "Selena": "I Was So Lucky"

Jennifer Lopez is celebrating the late Selena Quintanilla, whose inspiring life story helped launched her career. On the 25th anniversary of "Selena," the autobiographical film that features Lopez in the title role, the "On My Way" singer shared a heartfelt post honoring the late Queen of Tejano. "What a very special day … we're celebrating 25 years of SELENA! 🌹 Today we celebrate and honor Selena's legacy and music," Lopez captioned an Instagram slideshow featuring photos and videos of her onscreen portrayal of the icon. "This movie means so much to me … Selena and her family mean so much to me, and I was so lucky to be chosen to play her. I'll never forget this time in my life and it's an honor as an artist to have been part of the magic that is this movie."

The slideshow also features a throwback clip of Lopez promoting "Selena" on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and explaining what it was like having the singer's family on set. "The experts were there every day. It was tough, but I knew I had a tough job ahead of me," Lopez said at the time. "From the second I got the role, it was nonstop. I was working on another movie at that time, and in my trailer it was like music all day, videos all day, just to really absorb who she was. She was a very, very happy and alive person. I just absorbed as much as I could of her and tried to understand what made her tick, what made her happy, what made her sad."

In 1998, Lopez earned her first Golden Globe nomination for her spot-on portrayal of the superstar who in 1995 was fatally shot by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club. Last year, the Library of Congress's National Film Registry added "Selena" as a "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" film.
