What an incredibly scary close call for Zac Efron!!
Per an alarming report from The Daily Mail, the 32-year-old was recently hospitalized in Australia and treated for a “life or death” medical emergency. The High School Musical alum reportedly contracted a “form of typhoid or similar bacterial infection” while filming his new reality TV series — ironically called Killing Zac Efron — in Papua New Guinea and needed immediate care after suddenly falling ill.

Thanks to the assistance of fast-acting medical professionals, Zac was chartered from the southwest Pacific country to Brisbane in just the nick of time.
According to The Sunday Telegraph, Efron was in stable condition when he was admitted to St. Andrews War Memorial Hospital where he received treatment under careful watch for seven days. The star was reportedly given the all-clear to return home to the states on Christmas Eve and is said to be on the mend at home.
The Baywatch alum’s new gig is supposed to follow him as he goes “deep into the jungle of a remote, dangerous island, falling off the grid for 21 days.” During his daring travels, Zac must forego all luxuries to survive with nothing but basic gear and a savvy local partner to lead the way.
For this particular venture, Vanessa Hudgens‘ ex was joined by a tour guide named Cyril Tara who posted this friendly shot (below) on Facebook just days before the Neighbors star got sick:
We’re so incredibly thankful this didn’t turn out worse! We’ve already lost so many beloved stars in 2019 and we couldn’t imagine hearing anything more unfortunate than this news about him!
Rest up and be careful going forward, dude!
Ahead of filming, Efron told The Hollywood Reporter how stoked he was to embark on this new adventure:
“I tend to thrive under extreme circumstances and seek out opportunities that challenge me on every level. I am excited to explore any uncharted territory and discover what unexpected adventure awaits!”
We love a risky story as much as the next person and we understand how the desire to create new art can push one to some pretty dangerous places. But we and fans everywhere sincerely hope that Zac will put his health first!
Perezcious readers, will you check out Killing Zac Efron when it premieres on Quibi, a short-form mobile video platform, sometime next year? Are U just as shocked by this report as we are?
