Is Hailee Steinfeld finally going to spill the tea about what happened with Niall Horan? Set to music no less??
That’s what fans are inferring from her latest tease about upcoming music!
The Love Myself singer dropped a photo on her Instagram Sunday night of two words, along with a date. So it pretty much has to be her next single, the followup to September’s Afterlife. What’s the title that has everyone throwing popcorn bags in the microwave?
Wrong Direction.
Not only that, the song — and apparently music video, as there’s even a still — are being released on January the first. You know, 1/1.
Wrong Direction on 1/1? Come on, there’s no way that’s not about him, right?

OK, OK, we know we’re firmly in speculation territory, but there has been some drama already to suggest gurl has something to say.
The line we’d heard from a source after the breakup news got out was this:
“Niall wrapped up his tour and had more free time, but Hailee’s work schedule really ramped up, so they didn’t have time for a relationship. They still have a lot of love for each other.”
But that could very well be from a Niall source. We mean, just look at how much it feels like it’s blaming the Bumblebee star for being successful, like he was trying and she wasn’t.
Then you have the fact she made a big thing shortly after the breakup of reposting and doing praise hands on Julia Michaels‘ post in which she proclaimed “No more dating narcissists” in 2019 — including a lengthy description from the contemporaneous article 4 Signs You’re Dating A Narcissist from Insider magazine:
- “Narcissists are masters of manipulation, and they know how to twist any situation to make their victims feel ashamed, guilty, and responsible for everything that’s gone wrong. They believe they’re entitled to every shred of their partner’s attention, so they label anything else as ‘selfish.'”
- “In private, they will argue and abuse, while in public they’ll be charming and show their victim off. Essentially, they only see their worth when they have someone else to boast to. The rest of the time, the victim is just a punching bag — both metaphorically and literally.”
- “Narcissistic rage is fierce and scary, and the arguments can feel like they go on forever. Essentially, the victim is expected to apologise — even if there’s nothing to apologise for — and will get the silent treatment, or should expect to go round in circles, until they do.”
Hmm…
Well, we’ll certainly know if the song has any of these themes!
Do YOU think Hailee’s new song will strip bare what it’s like to date a narcissist? While being titled in such a way as to clarify exactly who she’s singing about??
