Meghan Markle Hired Princess Diana’s Lawyer For Her Tabloid Lawsuit!

As we told you last week, Friday was the first day of court in Meghan Markle‘s lawsuit against Associated Newspapers, owner of the Mail on Sunday and MailOnline, regarding an article published containing excerpts of a private handwritten letter to her estranged father, Thomas Markle.

But amidst the opening salvo of legal arguments — including one in which the defendants’ lawyers insinuated Meghan must have intended for the letter to be leaked and published because the handwriting was so pretty (yes, really) — we missed a pretty big emotional detail.

Meghan’s attorney, David Sherborne, has a very personal connection to Meghan and her hubby; he represented Prince Harry‘s late mother, Princess Diana!

Apparently Meghan specifically requested Sherborne, who specializes in privacy, confidentiality, and defamation suits. He’s represented Hugh Grant in his landmark phone hacking case, as well as other big names like Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton JohnHarry StylesKate Moss, the Spice GirlsChelsea Clinton, and even Donald Trump. According to a statement on his law firm 5RB‘s page:

“He is also acting for HRH The Duchess of Sussex in her misuse of private information, breach of data protection, and infringement of copyright action against Associated Newspapers.”

We think the HRH label is incorrect at this point, but we aren’t going to argue with such a high-powered lawyer about anything! LOLz!

With Sherborne having represented Diana, this sounds like a perfect fit! From the start this case has been very much about the late Lady Di for Harry, as he said in his initial open letter speaking out last October:

“I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”

In case you need a refresher on the case is all about:

Essentially Meghan is accusing the publisher of violating copyright, privacy, and data protection laws, misusing her private information in an attempt to damage her reputation. She has pointed out they can’t even stand on journalistic principle as they didn’t publish the full letter but rather an edited version to allegedly make her look bad. As Meghan and Harry wrote in their letter recently announcing their lack of cooperation with more tabloids:

“This policy is not about avoiding criticism. It’s not about shutting down public conversation or censoring accurate reporting. Media have every right to report on and indeed have an opinion on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, good or bad. But it can’t be based on a lie.”

Sounds fair to us! And with such a successful lawyer on their side, we imagine they won’t have too hard a time convincing the court either.
