Attention, Kelly Clarkson fans, this is not a drill! On March 26, the "Breakaway" singer announced that her long-awaited 10th studio album is coming out later this year, and it has a title, too. Clarkson revealed that her new album will be called "Chemistry" in an Instagram video, where she also spilled details on the inspiration behind her new songs.
"I've been working on this project for close to three years now. I wasn't sure I was going to release it, but I am. The album is called 'Chemistry,'" she said. "I was trying to find a word - it might be one of the songs on the album - that really described the whole thing. I didn't want everybody to think I was just coming out with some 'I'm angry' or 'I'm sad,' just those two emotions. This album is definitely the arc of an entire relationship."
Since her announcement, Clarkson has already released three singles from the album, including her most recent titled "I Hate Love" featuring none other than Steve Martin, who plays the banjo. Speaking to TalkShopLive in May, Clarkson said, "I'm still shocked he said yes. We have still never met."
According to Clarkson, the song's lyrics reference two movies, one featuring Ryan Gosling and the other Martin. "[Steve] is referenced in the song so then I was like, I wonder if I could pull it off. I wonder if he would play, because I know he's an incredible musician. And he did!" she said.
Clarkson previously told Variety in a 2022 interview that her next album was inspired by her divorce from music producer Brandon Blackstock. The former couple, who share two children together (River Rose and Remington Alexander), announced their split in late 2020.
"That whole relationship shouldn't be brought down to one thing," she continued. "There's the good, the bad and the ugly kind of thing going on. 'Chemistry' can be a really amazing, sexy, cool, fun thing, but it can also be very bad for you. So that's why I named it 'Chemistry,' I thought it was a perfect title to describe the entire album."
The "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" singer added that the album was "coming soon" and "music is coming out even sooner." She said, "I'm very excited about it. When I say soon, I mean really soon. I'm nervous but I'm excited about putting it out."
Clarkson also told Variety that "Chemistry" was an "important" album for her because it helped her process her emotions in the wake of her divorce. "This is an important album," she said. "I'm working on this in therapy: I have a hard time vocalizing what I'm feeling sometimes, so music is helpful for me. It's just been really healing."
