JAY-Z Told Jennifer Lopez To CUT ‘Kids In Cages’ Political Statement From Halftime Show?!

Jennifer Lopez’s powerful statement about the border crisis almost didn’t make it into her Super Bowl Halftime Show performance.

As many viewers noticed, there was a subtle but important moment in the middle of the superstar’s set that featured her 11-year-old daughter Emme singing a slower version of the hit single Let’s Get Loud as she and other Latina children crawled out of steel cages on the football field — a clever response to the Trump administration’s controversial immigration policy detaining undocumented children in cages.

According to lovebscott.com, the political statement about the border crisis was very much J.Lo’s idea, and she had quite a few critics telling her to cut it from the performance — including, weirdly enough, JAY-Z.

The outlet reports Roc Nation, the management/production company headed by the rap titan, fought to get the Jenny From The Block singer to cut the cage sequence from her set, due to Roc Nation’s ongoing deal with the NFL to smooth over the unrest caused by Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest.

Insiders told the publication that when J.Lo didn’t back down from the pressure from Roc Nation to ditch the segment, Hova himself allegedly tried to personally intervene to convince her. However, J.Lo would not be swayed.

Thank goodness!

While the cage segment was unaltered, the squabble apparently led to some other changes in the performance. The outlet reports tensions ran so high that Lopez eventually pulled out of joining Shakira for the Halftime Show’s opening number, only performing with her briefly at the end of the set.

Apparently, Roc Nation also discouraged the Whenever, Wherever singer (who is a client of the company) from appearing onstage during the brief rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The USA — which saw J.Lo donning a large Puerto Rican flag — but Shakira ultimately decided to do it anyway, and was seen on stage playing drums during the number.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you can ch-ch-check out the full performance (below).

We don’t think J.Lo has any regrets about keeping the political statement in. During an interview on Good Morning America the previous week, the mother-of-two said she and her team “accomplished what we set out to do,” teasing:

“Here’s what I’ll say. We accomplished what we set out to do. And for that, we’re really excited for everybody to see it. Because it’s gonna be a lot of fun.”

That it was!
