MoviePass Suddenly Shuts Down Without Warning — Will It Ever Come Back?!

See ya later, MoviePass!

The startup — which has been in dire financial straits after seeing major financial problems for months now — suddenly shut down this week without any warning to its users, only offering up tweets of announcement after the fact as movie-goers found out on Thursday that their subscriptions were no longer valid at theaters across the country!

In tweets beginning back on Wednesday night, the company started announcing to users that the app is being “enhanced” due to “technical problems” that they needed to resolve…

And while they didn’t mention that the company is out of money and unsustainable the way it is currently structured, that’s certainly been one issue at the forefront of MoviePass’ precipitous decline in the last few months.

According to Variety, the company said the suspension is apparently due to “maintenance-related issues,” as you can see reported (below):

“MoviePass said it put the service on hiatus starting at 5 a.m. ET on July 4. The company said the suspension is due to ‘maintenance-related issues.’ It didn’t provide details on what the problems are or how the new MoviePass app will be enhanced. ‘Once we have resolved these technical problems, the service will be live again. We estimate this process will take several weeks,’ MoviePass said in a tweet Wednesday.”

Hmmm…

Fans and subscribers weren’t exactly excited about this development, with dozens tweeting to MoviePass on Thursday, all receiving messages like these in response throughout the day (below):

Yikes!!!

According to a statement from the company itself, the indefinite hiatus will help here, as the startup “plans to use this time to recapitalize in order to facilitate a seamless transition and improved subscriber experience once the service continues.”

Again, hmmm… sure sounds like major money problems for a company that had previously seen its subscriber base fall through the floor, from a high of three million to the current number of about 200,000 in just about a year’s time. That’s an even bigger subscriber drop than mid-controversy James Charles!!!

Per the company, subscribers who stick around for the long haul from here will be “automatically credited for the number of affected days once the service continues,” so, uh, at least they’re going to try to make things right for loyal customers.

Still, consider us skeptical about this one, knowing how many problems MoviePass has had in the past. Face it, y’all… we may never see ’em again! Or if we do, the company and its subscription service may look VERY different!!!

What do y’all think about this?! Reactions?? Sound OFF about everything MoviePass-related in the comments (below)!!!
