Did Ranveer Singh Just Confirm His Relationship With Deepika Padukone?

An Open Letter To All Young And Aspiring Chefs In The Light Of Anthony Bourdain’s Death

Ranveer Brar, Fellow Chef And Comrade

One can never really know the motivation behind a human being taking his/her own life. We’re only left with a deep sadness and many unanswered questions. Could we have helped? Why didn’t we see it? Did they try to reach out? Anthony Bourdain‘s recent suicide did all this and more to me; it made me go into a shell and lock myself in a room for three days. I cut myself off from the world and sat there alone, with my own thoughts, pondering over the various explanations and the futility of it all.

Ranveer Brar

India is still a maturing market in regards to food and things related to it. Yet you can already smell the making of a mammoth phenomenon. Today, chefs are like celebrities. The same can be said about the food bloggers, top restaurant owners and all other influencers. They are becoming more and more known to the common man. All of this, over the past decade, has shown how big food and all in its spectrum can get. And this is not even the tip of the iceberg! That being said, everything has a price. Fame is one of them as the human mind does not know when to rest or when to stop. It is a natural human tendency, wherein the will to win takes over everything we do. I have taken more than 300 flights in the last one and half years. I’ve faced the camera more than I have faced the mirror and yet, I haven’t even started on the road that Anthony had walked for a long time.

Ranveer Brar

At the end of the day, we are all artists when we face the camera and our job is to excite, intrigue, explain and entertain. As fun as it sounds, it actually isn’t always the case, because first and foremost, television is a business. Shoots are expensive which means, just because you have a high fever or you are going through something in your life, the show will never stop going on. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the people in the television business, the people are great! Showbiz is a beast! You have to occupy and entertain 1.25 billion people and that is a mammoth task. All said and done, I haven’t done even a small percentage of work that Tony has. However, I know that with every passing day, there is a tussle between the chef and the celebrity, the artist and the businessman, the go with the flow guy and the meticulous planner. This is basically where it starts getting serious.

Ranveer Brar

When I go to catering colleges and ask students about what they want to become, my apprehensions double up when their response is to become a celebrity chef. This is worrisome because it looks like you start to realise that the next generation just wants to get to the end, before really even embarking on their journey.

Ranveer Brar

I say this at the cost of sounding old school, but you know something is wrong when the only thing that can decide if you’re a good chef, is your social media following. I am an optimist all along but I am definitely worried. I’m worried about the next generation of chefs because now there are a lot of us out there. Imagine if everyone just wanted to just be a celebrity chef and nothing else. They do not understand the pressure and every other aspect of this journey.

Ranveer Brar

It gives me goosebumps to think that there are millions of next-generation chefs, who can help make great food, choose the alternative to keep running on the treadmill, only to realise one day that it’s over. It is a high-pressure game and believes me, you need to have lived life and lost a few times in order to be ready for the kind of pressure you’re going to face. Every time I think that I’m well prepared because of the time when I was jobless and homeless in Boston, I still end up getting stomped. That’s the nature of it in a maturing country where the so-called celebrity in you is bound to challenge the chef in you. This will give you sleepless nights filled with pressure and stress.

Ranveer Brar

It’s essential to remind ourselves why we started this in the first place. We started this for the love of it and that a peaceful mind, at the end of the day, is more important than any status symbol that your young, impressionable and naive mind may aim to acquire. This letter is for all the young chefs out there because, at the end of the day, when you’re 62 and a celebrity chef of some stature, the only thing that will keep you going is the number of years of cooking you have behind you. Also, the sacred relationship with food that you have built over the years is just as important. I urge you to spend these years well. Work hard and prepare for it because when it does come, it’s going to hit you hard. Anthony is gone and has left behind a big void and an even bigger lesson for us all. This is important for the next generation of chefs in India to remember. Take the time and listen.

Sanju Review: Ranbir Kapoor Will Take You On A Roller-coaster Of Emotions

Sanju has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Be it Ranbir Kapoor‘s leaked images as Sanjay Dutt or the fact that Rajkumar Hirani was helming it, news about the project made sure the audience was interested right from the shooting phase and then came the teaser. If you’ve watched it, you’ll agree that it was mind-blowing. It felt like we were watching Sanjay himself and it left us with goosebumps. The trailer was released soon after and needless to say the audience was hooked. The combination of a controversial story of one of Bollywood’s very own plus Ranbir’s convincing acting made sure the audiences reached the theatres on opening day. Much like Sanju Baba’s life, the movie also had to face quite a fair bit of controversies for a couple of scenes but it’s release day and here we are!

I went into the movie with high expectations and it didn’t disappoint in fact, I left the theatre in awe. The movie keeps you engrossed throughout with all the bits of drugs, sex and drama that the trailer promises. The way details of Sanjay’s life have been divulged on the screen makes you feel like you’re on his life’s journey with him. From being born into an illustrious family to begging on the streets for a bus ticket, the actor has seen more ups and downs in his life than you could think of but what shines through in the film are the close relationships the actor has.

I will come to Hirani and his brilliant direction later but before that, I must commend the makers on their casting choices. Each actor has portrayed their characters impeccably well and even though it is Sanjay Dutt‘s life story, you can’t help but be in awe of the people in his life too. Ranbir transcends into each phase of Sanjay’s life seamlessly re-instating the fact that he is an incredible actor and born to be in front of the camera. From the hesitant debutant to the country’s most loved star to the most hated one, Sanjay’s character wasn’t an easy role to essay. But Ranbir being Ranbir, has a pull that keeps the audience engrossed in every scene. From portraying the actor’s care-free phase to the vulnerabilities of someone being confined in a cell you feel every emotion with him.

The seasoned star, Paresh Rawal does an outstanding job as Sunil Dutt portraying the serious and concerned shades of a father. Manisha Koirala plays Nargis Dutt and the love between the mother and son is essayed very well. Even though she has limited screen time, Manisha makes you wish you saw more of her in films again. Raazi actor, Vicky Kaushal impresses audiences once again with how well he dons the avatar of, Kamlesh Kanhaiyalal Kapasi, a Gujarati NRI and Sanju’s best friend. You have to watch the two together and the kind of relationship they share to understand what I am talking about. Dia Mirza and Anushka Sharma have also done a good job in the film. However, Sonam Kapoor as Ruby doesn’t blend with the rest of the cast. But an actor who deserves a special mention is Jim Sarbh, he is seen in a negative role and does it effortlessly too, he is one of those characters who you’d love to hate.  Now, coming back to the direction, Raju Hirani has worked his magic once again and taken the movie to another level. The sincerity and dedication with which he has handled each scene and the details of Sanjay’s life are truly incredible.

Being the kind of biopic Sanju is, it could have easily been made with a darker tone but the film balances the intensity with just the right amount of humour. Whether or not you are a Sanjay fan, whether or not you know about his story this movie is a must watch for anyone who enjoys a pure engaging and entertaining film. The additional song at the end of the film is a pure treat for all fans. I thoroughly enjoyed the film and I am going with 4 stars.

If you’re planning on watching one film over the weekend, this should be it.

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza & Anushka Sharma

Director: Rajkumar Hirani

Rating: 4/5

7 Desserts In Mumbai For The UNconventional Foodie

Kylie Jenner Applies Lip Liner With Her Eyes Closed—And Nails It

If you are obsessed with the youngest Jenner’s perfectly chiselled face (I am guilty of that too!), then Vogue’s new Beauty Secrets video featuring Kylie Jenner is a must-see. She shows us her whole beauty routine and I kid you not, it involves ’37’ steps! Yes, and it’s definitely worth a watch. She starts by perfecting her brows, moves on to her eyeshadow and completes the look with blush (her most favourite product BTW) and setting spray. Aptly known as ‘Kylie Jenner’s Guide To Lips, Brows, Confidence’, the video covers all these aspects seamlessly.

Here are the 7 things I learnt from her makeup routine:

1. Always start with your eyebrows and touch them up with a brow gel in the end.

2. Use concealer to define your brows and then blend it down all over your lids.

3. Always do your foundation after applying eyeshadow, so as to cover up the fallout.

4. Powder bake your jawline only after applying bronzer to get that chiselled finish.

5. For fuller lips, colour your whole lip with a lip liner (She did this with her eyes closed, say whaaaat?!).

6. Applying blush slightly on your forehead and chin brings freshness to the face.

7. You can use a brown mascara on the lower lashes if you don’t want them to overpower your eye makeup.

8. Blend your highlighter on the bridge of your nose with your finger so it sits well in place.

Here’s the link to watch the whole episode:

The best part of this video has to be the fact that her love for makeup is infectious. It reminded me of my enthusiasm for makeup and my love for blush too.

What was your take away from this video? Let us know in the comments below.

Trolling Women Online Is Becoming A Serious Problem & We Need To Talk About IT ASAP

Cyberbullying (Image Courtesy: Shutterstock)

This week on episode 3 of #TheGirlTribe, MissMalini aka Malini Agarwal caught up with the every-charming and hilarious—Mallika Dua. On this episode, they talk about the every prevailing issue of the amount of trolling women face on the internet. They also talk about how we need stricter rules when it comes to cyberbullying. Watch the episode here!

There is a horrible trend that has been sweeping the internet lately. It seems that more and more people find it increasingly important to troll and demean others. Sadly, most of the trolling, shaming and bullying is aimed at women. While this is something that is common around the world, it’s all the more prevalent in India. From rampant sexism to being bullied for every small thing, the women of our country have to deal with a lot. So what makes people on the internet so brave? Would they actually have the courage to say some of the things they say, to a persons face? Let’s take a closer look at some of the things covered in this episode.

To answer the question asked before, whether the trolls and keyboard warriors have the courage to say things to a persons face, the answer is no. Trolls thrive and live by the fact that they will never be held accountable because the internet allows you to be anonymous. This is like getting a free pass to doing whatever you want and no one can do a thing about it because no one knows you. While more social platforms are coming out with filters to block these hateful and nasty comments, it’s clearly not enough. Trolling is equivalent to bullying and as a community, we need to start calling it out and taking action. While it may be hard and almost impossible to ignore these people, it’s important to remember that you should never feed the trolls.

Discrimination

While trolling is a serious problem, it isn’t the only one faced by women today. Discrimination is another rampant problem that the women of our country face. From pay-gaps to being denied positions, women are discriminated against on a daily basis. Things like age, beauty, values, background, etc. are constantly used against them. Change is coming and more and more women are starting to call out the blatant discrimination they face. It’s time we start treating people as equals because, at the end of the day, we’re all humans.

The Internet

The internet is like a bottomless pit. It’s filled with things that can intrigue you and at the same time, disgust you. By this point, the direction we’re heading in is obvious. We’re going towards (if not already in) a completely digital world. Social media is an important tool in this world. However, often times the power of social media is misused. It is used to harass others and bully them. We need to have strict rules when it comes to cyberbullying. Laws need to be put in place so that people don’t have to go through that sort of torment. Furthermore, celebrities need to realise the power they have on social media and over their fans. When things go sideways with other celebs or people, they need to be able to rein their fans in and call out their behaviour. That is the only way we reduce the amount of hate on the internet.

What are your thoughts on the matter? Do you think people who’re caught trolling and cyberbullying should face more severe consequences? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
