Why Tina Turner Left the US and Became a Swiss Citizen: "It Felt Like Home Right Away"
Tina Turner was a legend in every sense of the word, and her death at age 83 on May 24 sparked countless tributes, as well as a renewed interest in her life story. Turner's life was marked by incredible resilience, and the comeback she launched in the 1980s after leaving her abusive husband in 1976 made her a prime example of how to rise from the ashes after hardship.
Fortunately, Turner seemed to find new love and peace - as well as a new home - in the last few decades of her life. Turner died at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, but she first moved to the country in 1995. As it turned out, love had something to do with her decision to leave America, but her own desire for peace and privacy also played a role.
In 1985, Turner began dating German record producer Erwin Bach, per People, and she later said that she moved overseas in part to be with him. "I have left America because my success was in another country and my boyfriend was in another country. . . . My boyfriend moved there to run the company and I always wanted to go to Switzerland and I was very happy," she said in a 1997 interview with Larry King. She added that as big as she was in the United States, she was more popular in Europe.
In fact, Turner told "60 Minutes"'s Mike Wallace in 1996 that she was prepared to gross $100 million from a three-month European tour. "No one in America knows that," she said of her popularity in Europe. "I mean, people are always shocked when I explain."
Turner took Swiss citizenship in 2013 and married Bach that same year. The couple lived in a lavish estate called Chateau Algonquin, a sprawling, gated ivy-covered complex marked with a plaque that read, "Do not even think about bothering Tina Turner before noon," according to The New York Times. In 2021, per Architectural Digest, they bought an additional 24,000-square-foot home on Lake Zurich for around $77 million.
"One of the reasons she came to Switzerland was to have a completely normal life," Markus Ernst, the mayor of Küsnacht, told ABC shortly after news of Turner's death broke. "She could go to restaurants without being photographed all the time . . . in the street, people didn't stare at her or ask for her autograph." He also shared that Turner was involved in the community, though residents took care to allow her to live her life in peace.
Despite her popularity in Europe, Turner seemed to live an idyllic life in Switzerland, finding an oasis from the pressures of fame there. "As time went by, I learned more and more about Switzerland, like that security and discretion are people's top priority - just like they are for me," Turner said in a TV ad for the company Swisscom, per Fortune. "And when I finally moved to Switzerland, it felt like home right away. People respect each other's privacy here, take care of each other."

Niall Horan Skirts One Direction Reunion Rumors - but Reveals the Band Is Still Close
Directioners, it's definitely not the time to give up hope for a One Direction renaissance. Ever since One Direction split in 2016, rumors have been circulating on pretty much a monthly basis about whether Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik will ever reunite. They've been dispelled time and time again, but according to Horan, although a musical reunion may not be on the way, the band is very much still in contact.
In a May 25 interview with E! News, Horan shared that the former bandmates still regularly correspond. "We've had three or four group chats," he said, sharing that there's now a new, particularly active one. "Some of them have been more quiet than others. This new one is definitely louder than most, and it's been great," he said. "I'm sure if I had a look at my phone in a few minutes I'd see some messages." Still, when asked if any One Direction bandmates would appear on his forthcoming album, "The Show," he had a clear response. "No," he said. "Now that's a straight and easy answer."
Earlier in May, during an interview at a Wembley Arena boxing match on May 13, Horan's fellow One Directioner Tomlinson also discussed the band's new chat. "I don't know," he said when asked if he thought the group would reunite at any point, "but we've just made a new group chat. That's something."
In April, though, another One Direction member did seem to suggest that a One Direction collaboration or reunion could be on the horizon. Appearing on the last ever "The Late Late Show With James Corden" on April 27, Styles sat on the sofa with his longtime friend, Corden, and Will Ferrell. The three played a final game of "Spill Your Guts," in which the celebrities get asked an awkward question and have to decide to answer or face a forfeit of eating something pretty disgusting. Styles was asked: "Yes or no, will there be a One Direction reunion? Will it ever happen?" As the crowd screamed, Styles answered: "I would never say never to that. I think if there was a time when we all felt that was what we want to do, then I don't see why we wouldn't." Now, we don't know about you, but that sounds like a (sort of) confirmation, right? Even Corden said: "I'm taking that as a yes!"
Social media had been alight with gossip that the boyband would all be appearing on "The Late Late Show"'s last episode together. They have all appeared on the "Carpool Karaoke" segment previously, and played tattoo roulette, which ended with Styles getting the show's logo inked on his arm. The four remaining members have all appeared on the show individually, too, but the TV reunion was swiftly denied in the run-up to the last show.
It was three years ago when the rumor mill last began spinning out of control as fans believed that One Direction would reunite for their 10-year anniversary in 2020. A decade had gone by since the band was formed on "The X Factor," and Payne even got fans riled up by telling The Sun: "We've got a 10-year anniversary coming up, so we've all been speaking together a lot over the last few weeks which has been really nice," he said. "To hear a lot of people's voices and seeing old content and different things that we haven't seen for a long time or never seen before, it's very interesting. At the moment I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say." Yet sadly, perhaps due to the COVID-19 pandemic, nothing came to fruition.
While the boys are no stranger to the reunion gossip, we have to admit there are clues that are stacking up. The members have all been spotted supporting each other individually, with Payne most recently attending the premiere of Tomlinson's "All of Those Voices" film. Styles thanked his former bandmates as he collected his win at the 2023 Brits, and Horan and Payne congratulated him on his recent win at the Grammys. Styles added fuel to the fire when he posted a photo of him wearing a One Direction tshirt in the gym in March before quickly deleting it. And in August 2022, Malik took to Instagram to offer fans an acoustic snippet of "Night Changes."
While there is no concrete evidence of a One Direction reunion in the works currently, it can't be denied that the signs are adding up. And with Styles confirming he would be on board, we'll be keeping an eye out for the "Little Things" pointing towards the big reunion moment.

The "Heartstopper" Cast Navigates New Romance in Season 2 First-Look Photos
Netflix's teen series "Heartstopper" won hearts far and wide when it premiered in April 2022, and we finally have our first glimpse of season two. The streamer released first-look photos on May 24, a month after the cast celebrated the show's one-year anniversary by previewing the new season and announcing its summer premiere date in a video.
On Dec. 2, 2022, Netflix revealed that season two of the show had officially wrapped filming. The media company posted a photo on Instagram of actors Kit Connor and Joe Locke with writer Alice Oseman, alongside the caption, "And that's a wrap on 'Heartstopper' Season 2 . . . à bientôt!"
The French phrase, translating to "see you soon," makes total sense considering the cast had been spotted filming around Paris. Plus, "Heartstopper" is based on a series of young-adult graphic novels by Oseman, and in the books the cast head to the City of Love. Oseman also took to Instagram at the time to tell followers, "That's a wrap on 'Heartstopper' season 2! It's been an incredibly intense few months on set with many new challenges for the cast and crew, but everyone rose to those challenges with such passion and skill and determination. Huge thanks to every single member of the cast and crew - everyone has worked ridiculously hard and given it their all, and for that I am eternally grateful. This season is going to be so magical and I can't wait to get started on post-production!"
Back in June 2022, Netflix announced that the show had been renewed for not only season two, but also season three. Season one adapted the first two volumes of "Heartstopper," and season two is focusing on volume three. Oseman is planning a fifth and final volume of the series (expected to be released this December), but it's not yet clear if the last two books will be covered in a third season of the show, or if the streamer will give the series a fourth season to finish up its many threads.
Before Netflix announced "Heartstopper"'s renewal, the show's creative team hinted about where the series would go next. "I'll definitely want to be bringing in the themes of mental health, because that's something that's really important in the books," Oseman told Digital Spy in April 2022. "The challenge of writing 'Heartstopper' is exploring those darker issues while keeping the tone so optimistic and hopeful. That has been, like, the struggle of writing it for me the whole way through. But I like to think that it's possible [laughs]. I feel like I have achieved it in the books."
Oseman also revealed that in future seasons, the scope of the story will likely expand to involve some of the teachers, not just the teenage students who have been the center of the show so far. "We'll be moving into volume three of the books. And that is when the teacher romance happens," Oseman said in the April interview. "So in the show, we've already got Mr. Ajayi, but in the books there's also Mr. Farouk, who comes in, in volume three. And they have this kind of interesting friendship going on in the background that eventually becomes something more."
