Royal Staffers Have Reportedly Rescinded Bullying Claims Against Meghan Markle

Months after Meghan Markle faced bullying allegations from former employees, new reports are coming to light about the situation. In a new epilogue for the paperback edition of Finding Freedom by Carolyn Durand and Omid Scobie, sources claim that two of the royal palace staffers from the original complaint have rescinded their claims. The allegations were first addressed in an article by The Times in March, where the couple's then-communications secretary Jason Knauf claimed Meghan "drove two personal assistants out of the household and undermined the confidence of a third staff member" back in 2018.

After the story was released, Meghan and Prince Harry's spokesperson released a statement to People addressing the bullying allegations, saying, "The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma. She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good."

A representative for Meghan also denied the claims in a statement to The Times, saying, "Let's just call this what it is - a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation. We are disappointed to see this defamatory portrayal of The Duchess of Sussex given credibility by a media outlet. It's no coincidence that distorted several-year-old accusations aimed at undermining The Duchess are being briefed to the British media shortly before she and The Duke are due to speak openly and honestly about their experience of recent years." Many of Meghan's close friends, including Serena Williams, actor Patrick J. Adams, and actress Abigail Spencer, also came to her defense on social media.

Shortly after The Times article was released, Buckingham Palace launched an official investigation about the bullying allegations through an independent law firm. Their findings were originally supposed to be released in June, but the investigation has since been delayed. It's possible that an official verdict won't be released until 2022.

The Fresh Prince Reboot Has Found Its Star in Jabari Banks - Watch Will Smith Announce the News

A new iteration of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is coming our way, and we finally know who will be starring in it. On Tuesday, Peacock announced that newcomer Jabari Banks will be playing the iconic role of Will, previously played by Will Smith. For the special announcement, Smith actually helped do the honors as he shared a video of him telling Banks the exciting news. In a fun twist of fate, Banks actually helms from West Philadelphia just like his character; he recently graduated from University of the Arts in Philly in 2020. Though this will mark his first big acting role, he is also a songwriter, singer, rapper, and basketball player. Perhaps we'll get to hear him rap the show's theme song?

The new series, titled Bel-Air, will be a modern-day retelling of the classic '90s sitcom, inspired by a viral YouTube trailer created by Morgan Cooper. Per the show's official tagline, Bel-Air will "dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show." A release date hasn't been set yet, but it has already been picked up for two seasons. Watch the sweet announcement video above as we wait for more casting details.

Reservation Dogs Reimagines the Mythical Deer Woman Into a Total Badass

Reservation Dogs has been crushing it with their celebrity cameos. In this week's episode, we were treated to appearances by Kaniehtiio Horn, Kiowa Gordon, and Wes Studi. Horn played the role of the mythical Deer Woman, Gordon appeared as one of her victims, and Studi took on the role of a harmless townie named Bucky. While Studi's performance certainly made us laugh, it was Horn's portrayal of Deer Woman that truly stole the show.

Similar to the blurry owl scene in episode three, the Deer Woman is another nod to Indigenous culture as she appears in several stories told by different tribal nations. In some stories, Deer Woman is connected with fertility and love, but in others, she's known as a dangerous being who seduces men, typically adulterous or promiscuous men, and leads them to heartbreak or death.

In the case of Horn's Deer Woman, she falls more in line with the latter. Episode five sees the mythical figure as a badass woman who only goes after bad men. While speaking to a young Officer Big in a flashback, Deer Woman tells him that he shouldn't fear her because he's good. "You're going to want to give up. You're going to want to start drinking, become a sh*tass, have a bunch of kids all over the place and never see them, you know like your dad, but just don't do that," she tells him. "You think about your grandmother. You imagine her with you every single step of the way. You do that and you'll be alright. So I guess what I am saying is be good, fight evil. You do that and you'll never ever have to see me again." Well, it looks like Big really took her words to heart because he's been doing good ever since.

The Girl on the Train Author Just Released a New Book, and It's Terrifying to Its Core

Three women, one murder, and countless secrets. Who did it, and more importantly, why? Paula Hawkins's newest thriller A Slow Fire Burning follows the same highly engaging page-turning format as her previous hit The Girl on the Train, but this book is much, much more sinister, suspenseful, and downright jaw-dropping in all the right ways. The bestselling author is no stranger to writing bone-chilling thrillers, and this novel is a whole new level of psychological terror. Deliciously dark and dangerously unsettlingly, A Slow Fire Burning will give you chills with every chapter.

"Deliciously dark and dangerously unsettlingly, A Slow Fire Burning will give you chills with every chapter."

When a devilishly handsome man is found brutally murdered on his houseboat, police wonder who could have committed something this gruesome. While trying to stitch together his complicated relationships, investigators are left with three women who just might've had the motive to kill. But which one has blood on her hands, and what led her to do it? As secrets swirl and lies unravel, the town tries to get to the bottom of the murder before it's too late. A chilling story that'll leave you with more questions than answers, A Slow Fire Burning gives the term "thriller" a whole new meaning. With unexpected characters, unforeseen consequences, and unusual connections, Hawkins's new book is a bloody masterpiece that's darker than it appears.

Standout Quote

"That knowledge, the sense of betrayal that came with it, that changed her. It left her marked. It left her angry."

As with any psychological thriller, you need to be in a stable headspace to read this book. There are some gruesome details about murder in here, so be sure you're equipped to handle those. Rey and Kylo Ren Stans: You'll Love This Debut Romance Book From Fanfic Author Ali Hazelwood

If you told me that my favorite book of 2021 would end up being about two fake dating scientists whose characters are loosely based on Rey and Kylo Ren from Star Wars, I would not have believed you. Fake dating isn't my favorite trope, science was my worst school subject, and while I've always enjoyed watching Star Wars, I wouldn't exactly call myself a fan. But that was before I read The Love Hypothesis (out Sept. 14) by Ali Hazelwood.

In the novel, Olive Smith is a biology Ph.D. student who is on a mission to convince her best friend that she's in a relationship. Considering she's definitely single, and worried that her friend will learn the truth, Olive randomly panic-kisses the first man she comes across in the lab - who just so happens to be the notoriously intimidating Dr. Adam Carlsen, a professor in her department. Nobody is more surprised than Olive when Adam agrees to go along with her charade. But how long can Olive keep up the ruse of fake dating when real feelings become involved?

I have a thing for love stories in which the guy has harbored a years-long crush on the girl while she remains endearingly clueless (don't worry, I'm not giving anything away - it's pretty obvious from the start how Adam feels about Olive), and so I knew by Olive and Adam's second interaction that I would LOVE this book. Olive is smart, ambitious, and funny, Adam is tender and thoughtful, and together their connection is pure slow-burning gold with lots of chemistry (both the literal and figurative kind).

Their connection is pure slow-burning gold with lots of chemistry (both the literal and figurative kind).

This is Hazelwood's debut novel, but she's been writing fanfiction for years. I read that this book was actually based on a previous, and hugely popular, Star Wars fanfiction story she wrote a few years ago. So if you're a Rey and Kylo Ren stan, you should probably read this book. I mean, just look at the cover!

Standout Quote

"His eyes were on her, now. There was light in them that she didn't understand. 'You are not mediocre, Olive. . . And the work you presented is important, rigorous, and brilliant.' He took a deep breath. His shoulders rose and fell in time with the thudding of her heart. 'I wish you could see yourself the way I see you.'"

Mindset

Get ready to dive into all things academia: the politics, the research, the nerdy banter. It's like a world of its own and reminded me a little of my own college days. This book has some funny antics but doesn't shy away from diving into the more serious side of academia (including sexual harassment).

Where You Should Read It

Snuggled up at a student cafe with a pumpkin spice latte (Olive's drink of choice).

Read This If You Like . . .

Rey and Kylo Ren fanfic, romance stories set in academia like How to Fail at Flirting by Denise Williams, or a fake dating trope.

POPSUGAR Reading Challenge Prompt(s)

This novel can check off more than one 2021 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge prompt; just pick the one that fits best for you.

  • A book that's published in 2021
  • A book about a subject you are passionate about
  • A book you think your best friend would like

How Long It Takes to Read

The story is 360 pages long, and I read it every spare second I could over a weekend - and then immediately started over again when I finished since I didn't want it to end.

Give This Book to . . .

Friends who love Star Wars or smart and science-y love stories, who work in STEM, or who have ever fantasized about dating that really hot professor from college.

The Sweet Spot Summary

The Love Hypothesis ($14) follows Olive, a Ph.D. student, who fake dates the one professor her peers love to hate: the intimidating (and intimidatingly hot) Dr. Adam Carlsen. She doesn't really believe in love, but if there's anyone who can convince her, it just might be Adam.

Nia DaCosta Makes History as the First Black Woman Director to Top Box Offices With Candyman

Nia DaCosta is making history once again! Following the Aug. 27 premiere of Candyman, the 31-year-old has become the first Black woman director to debut a movie in the No. 1 weekend spot at the domestic box office, grossing $22.3 million in its opening weekend. The film is a sequel to the 1992 horror classic of the same name and is written by Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld. It follows Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as an artist named Anthony McCoy who moves in to the original movie's now-gentrified neighborhood with his girlfriend, Brianna Cartwright, played by Teyonah Parris.

Of course, DaCosta is no stranger to breaking records, as she's also the first Black woman to direct a Marvel film with the upcoming The Marvels. The Captain Marvel sequel is currently in production and stars Parris, Brie Larson, and Iman Vellani. It's set to hit theaters on Nov. 11, 2022.

Reservation Dogs Gets Celeb Cameos Right by Further Showcasing the Indigenous Community

FX on Hulu's Reservation Dogs isn't just a refreshingly authentic take on Indigenous life, it's also an important step for representation. Not only is every main cast member on the Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi-created series Indigenous - including Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs's Elora Danan and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai's Bear - but every writer and director is as well. With the exception of Bobby Lee and Garrett Hedlund's cameos, this representation also carries over into some of the most engaging (and hilarious) side characters, some of which are portrayed by comedians like Rutherford Falls's Jana Schmieding. Whether they are a mainstay in Indigenous cinema or have ties to the Native music scene, we've rounded up the biggest celebrity cameos from Reservation Dogs ahead.
